Dr Sam Hay has been working at IWGP since 2004, starting as a GP trainee. He grew up in Tassie as an accomplished rower and hockey player, graduating with Honours from the University of Tasmania Medical School in 1999. He went on to work for two years at the Royal Hobart Hospital before moving to Sydney with his wife, for his first posting with the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps as a doctor.
Sam spent five years in the full-time Army where he worked as the Regimental Medical Officer for the 3rd Battalion – a parachute capable light infantry battalion; the Parachute Surgical Team – a small scaled hospital capable of being thrown out of a plane; and as the Senior Medical Officer for the Army’s premier field hospital (just like MASH). Sam was fortunate enough to deploy five times overseas, his highlights as an Aeromedical Evacuation doctor in Afghanistan, and with the ANZAC hospital supporting displaced locals in Sumatra after the 04 Tsunami. Sam completed his General Practice training whilst in the Army, and has now completed a Diploma in Sports Medicine at UNSW.
Sam has great interest in child health and musculoskeletal medicine. His work in the Army has enabled him to develop a thorough knowledge of sports injuries, back pain, joint injury management, injury rehabilitation, orthopaedic care, and workcover issues – in patients of all ages. He also has interests in general medicine for adolescents and adults.
Major Samuel Hay
On leaving medical school in Tasmania, Major Samuel Hay spent 2 years at 1 HSB as a resuscitation medical officer with the Parachute Surgical Team, before posting to 3 RAR as the Regimental Medical Officer for 2004 and 2005. He has deployed on Operation Bel Isi, Operation Anode, Operation Sumatra Assist, and Operation Slipper. In 2006, he returned to 1 HSB as the Senior Medical Officer.
