James graduated from Sydney University in 1989 and worked in Prince of Wales and Gosford Hospitals for 4 years, including such areas as cardiology, geriatrics, and stroke rehabilitation. He started in general practice in 1993 and completed his training for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 1997. In 1996 he began working in Leichhardt and completed a paediatric diploma at Sydney Children’s Hospital in 1999. He also works as an advisor to the National Prescribing Service.
